Serving as a Youth Crew Leader with Montana Conservation Corps will have a lifelong impact not only on you, but also on the communities, landscapes and teens enrolled in our Expedition Program. As a Youth Crew Leader your service term begins with the intensive MCC Leadership Development Program, which will provide you with all of the training, reinforcement and feedback necessary to develop into an effective leader with MCC and beyond. These first three months are spent rigorously training within the five MCC Program Objectives: communication and team skills, leadership skills, environmental stewardship, technical field skills, and the development of a strong service ethic. The MCC Leadership Development Program includes training in Wilderness Advanced First Aid, several statewide and regional soft-skill workshops, and multiple hands-on work experiences that will challenge you to develop a strong work ethic, build your ability to endure the elements of the Rocky Mountains, and create opportunities for you to hone and polish your people skills.
As a Youth Crew Leader you will also be provided with specialized training from professionals across the state in youth behavior and development. You will spend several weeks working with local youth-serving agencies and nonprofits in order to support their efforts while developing and enhancing your own ability to work with youth effectively.
These trainings will prepare you for the responsibility of leading a crew of teenagers. You will become fluent in the MCC education materials and will have time to plan and exercise your lesson delivery. You will be introduced to the MCC Safety Culture and will be given the tools to effectively manage a project worksite. You will learn the administrative ropes and will practice documenting your project accomplishments, crew dynamics, and behavioral/safety incidents. You will be asked to carry out the MCC program requirements of completing 10 hours of volunteer service with a local nonprofit organization and attending one public meeting in order to share your experiences with the youth on your crew. Throughout the entire experience you will be given feedback from your staff and peers in order to increase and improve your performance.
Upon successful completion of the Leadership Development Program in May, you and your co-leader will hit the trail for your first four-week session with a crew of four Montana youth ages 15 to 17. You and your crew will delve into the meaning of service while helping solve critical wildlife habitat challenges; get your hands dirty creating safe trails and maintaining access to remote wilderness areas, national parks, grasslands, and forests; and support community nonprofit organizations through volunteer service projects. You will be in the field for the entire session, with the support of staff and a senior crew leader, and one scheduled day off. You and your co-leader will be on the majority of the time. Upon the completion of your first session you will be given time to recoup and plan before departing once again, for session two.
At the end of the day, the unscripted crew experiences you have will be the greatest teacher and will create your most lasting MCC memories. Watching the members of your youth crew gain confidence and ability will leave a lasting mark. Inside jokes and storytelling will fill your days and leave you with no doubt about the impact you have had on these young people.

### Benefits
Youth Crew Leaders receive a $605 bi-weekly living allowance, training, and health insurance after 30 days. Leaders will receive an AmeriCorps Education Award of $2,822 upon successful completion of the term of service.
### Qualifications - Must Have
At least two years of college, military service, or equivalent work experience
Previous experience or training in a leadership role
Effective communications skills
US Citizenship
Valid driver's license
